5/4/01
LAUNCH DAY 2000
Launched boat at 0830
Motored over to D dock. Checked soundings along the way. The shallowest spot in C-dock channel was 5.5 feet under the transducer about 100' from the end. There was also a shallow spot on the approach to d-dock about 5 feet under the transducer. The transducer is about 1.25' below the surface. At the dock it reads 3.4' and the a pole shows about 4.6.
At about 1630 I motored over to the mast crain to step the mast. That took about 30 minutes and I motored back to d-dock.

5/13/01 (1)
First sail of the 2001 season.
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind NW 5-8 knots , waves <2', visibility 20 mi, temp 65-70.
Main, 130
1700-1630 Raised main near end of river and 130 as we fell off a bit inside the wall. We sailed to the east behind the wall on a reach to broad reach then headed up for speed making 2-4 knots. We tacked and headed towards the Fairport docks close hauled making 2-3 knots. About 200 yards from the wall at the end of the river we tacked and headed for the main entrance. Wind became very light and we ghosted out the entrance at less then .7 knots. We were also slowed by power boat wakes. Once out we headed NNE for about 1 mile on a close reach at about 2.5 knots. We tacked and headed back to the entrance making 3-4 knots. We sailed in and to the river mouth, dropped the sails and motored up the river. The rig was OK in the light conditions but I think it could stand to be tightened.

5/14/01 (2)
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind NW 5-10 knots , waves <2', visibility 25 mi, temp 60-65.
Main, 130
1745-2030 With Alyssa Conklin. We raised the main and 130 near the end of the river and shut the motor down on the way to the main entrance. We sailed out and NNE on a very close reach making 3-4 knots. I set the self steering which did well except in the lulls. About 3 miles out we tacked and headed in on a close reach making 4-4.5 knots. As we closed on the entrance the wind died back. Once inside we dropped the 130 and drifed a bit with the main up then dropped it and motored up the river.

6/8/01 (3)
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind NW 7-12 knots , waves <2', visibility 25 mi, temp 60-65.
Main, Asym
1930-2100 With the Stanleys. Raised main near the end of the river and motored out the main entrance. Once clear of the main entrance we rased the asymetric spinnaker in the lee of the main then headed off to the NE on a reach as high as the spinnaker wound let us. We went out about 2.5 miles making 5-5.5 knots then jibed and headed inshore on as high a course as we could. About 3/4 miles offshore we dropped the asymetric in the lee of the main and motored in the east entrance, across the harbor and into the river. We dropped the main on the way up the river.

6/9/01 (4)
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind W 5-8 knots , waves <2', visibility 15 mi, temp 70-75.
Main, 130
1800-1930 We raised the main and 130 in the river and motor sailed out the main entrance. We headed NW close hauled making 3.5-5 knots. We went out about 1.5 miles, tacked and headed back to the main entrance on a close reach at about 4-4.5 knots. We sailed in the entrance, dropped the 130 and motored to the river. We fropped the main on the way up the river to the dock.

6/13/01 (5)
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind NE 5-10 knots , waves <2', visibility 15 mi, temp 75-80.
Main, WJ
1830-1940 Raised main and jib in harbor and motor sailed out the main entrance at about 5 knots. We shut the motor off and sailed to the north close hauled making 4.5 - 5 knots with the self steering set. About 1 mile out we tacked and headed east towards the race fleet then we fell off to a beam reach headed for the main entrance at about 3-3.5 knots. About 1/4 mile out we had slowed to 2 knots in the diminishing wind. We starthed the motor and motor sailed a bit at abouit 4 knots then dropped the jib. We passed Windshadow in the entrance as they headed out looking for wind. We then headed for the river at full throttle making 6.2 knots with the main sail helping. We motored up passed the freighter loading at the salt dock, dropped the main and motored into the dock.

6/15/01 (6)
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind NW 10-15 knots , waves 2-3', visibility 25 mi, temp 75-80.
Main, 130
1645-1830 Raised main and 130 in river and motor sailed out main entrance. We headed off on a close reach making 5.5-6 knots. There was a Pearson 323 out ahead of us and we were slowly gaining on them. We set the self steering and it worked well with a little meandering as the wind puffed. About 2 miles out we tacked and headed back towards the main entrance on a beam reach at 6-6.2 knots with ocassional small surfs to 6.4 or 6.5. We sailed in the entrance and hardened up to a close reach and sailed up the river past the salt dock. About halfway from the salt dock to the turning basin we started the motor and dropped the jib. We motored to the basin, dropped the main and motored to the dock.

6/24/01 (7)
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind NE 2-4 knots , waves <2', visibility 25 mi, temp 75-80.
Main, 130
1800-1930 With Jim Pfeiffer, Camelle, Fether, Valery and Ryan. Winds were very light. We raised the main and 130 in the harbor and motored out the main entrance and out about 1/4 mile. We shut the motor down and sailed on a close reach to the NW at about 2 knots. We went out about 1 mile, jibed and headed back on a reach at about 1.5 knots. We motored in the main entrance, dropped the sails and motored up the river to the dock.

7/22/01 (8)
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind E 2-6 knots , waves <2', visibility 15 mi, temp 80-85.
Main, 130, 170
1800-2030 We motored down the river, set the main near the harbor and motored out the main entrance. We headed off to the NE a bit and shut the motor down. We raised the 130 and sailed off on a close reach at 2-2.5 knots. I tried to set the self steering but there was not enough wind to heel the boat enough to get the system to balance. After about 15 minutes I swithed to the 170 by raising it in the starboard groove and tacking to drop the 130. We sailed on a close reach at 2.6-3.3 knots. I was able to get the boat to balance for self steering with the 170. The wind filled a bit giving us speed in the 4-4.5 range. We tacked back and forth a bit then headed north west on a broad reach at 2.5-3 knots, jibed and sailed in the entrance on a close reach. We sailed in the entrance and up the river a bit past the coast guard station then started the motor and dropped the sails. I think the sail change to the 170 was good for 3/4 to 1 knot of speed. For the broad reach we probably could have set the asymmetric for anothe 2 knots over the 170.

7/29/01 (9)
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind E 10-16 knots , waves 2-4', visibility 15 mi, temp 75-80.
Main, WJ
1700-1830 Raised the main in the basin and motored down the river. I thought we could carry the main down the river but it was a bit too tight. Down near the bottom of the river we were able to carry and we motor sailed out a bit and tacked behind the wall. We shut the motor down we sailed at about 2.5 knots with the main on a close reach. We raised the jib and speed was up to 5 - 5.5. We tacked and headed to the main entrance close hauled at about 5.5 knots with about 15 degrees of heel. Once out we headed NW on a close reach at 5.5 - 6 knots. We went out for about 25 minutes then tacked and headed back on a close hauled course high of the main entrance. Tightening the outhaul and backstay adjuster helped keep us flatter. We spotted Whitehawk returning from Rondo and tacked to pass for a photo. After they passed we tacked and headed in on a reach at 5-6 knots rolling over the waves. We sailed about 1/3 of the way up the river until the wind died then motored to the turning basin dropping the sails on the way. Then we motored to the dock.

7/29/01 (10)
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind s 10-28 knots , waves <2', visibility 15 mi, temp 80-85.
Main
1630-1730 Set the main in the basin and motor sailed down the river. In the harbor we headed east making 2-4 knots in very gusty conditions. We went to the east end and decided not to set the working jib which was ready to go. We tacked and headed back to the west end, tacked again and headed dead down past Jorney (they were comming in) then tacked again and preped the motor to head in. Once the motor was started we dropped the main and motored up the river. It was very windy going up the river, about 15-20 and pretty steady. The knotmeter said we were going 4 knots at full throttle but I think it is not reading well. There was water half way up the transome and that usually happend at 5.5-6 knots. The impeller may be fouled a bit. We have not cleaned the bottom all season.

10/20/01 (12)
Daysailing from Fairport, OH.
Wind w 12-18 knots , waves 1-3', visibility 15 mi, temp 60-65.
Main, WJ
1400-1530
